THE MILITARY FRONTIER IN THE
NATIONAL-LIBERATION PLANS OF THE SERBS AND CROATS 1860-1873
Many treatises dealing with the
national and political programmes and liberation plans of the
Serbs and Croats did touch upon the question of the Military
Frontier. Some of the brief periods and certain actions
concerning the Frontier have already been studied and are
generally well known. However, literature on the national
liberation plans and actions in Krajina is in most cases strictly
limited to specific periods or themes. It therefore does not
permit an overall view of the entirety of the problem over the
uninterrupted period from 1860 to 1873. During this period,
Krajina played an important role having international dimensions
in all critical moments. Its well-organized, well-trained,
well-armed and sizable army was equally reckoned with by Croat
and Serb national leaders, but also by Italian and Hungarian
freedom fighters, as well as by the ruling circles in Vienna. The
focus of this chapter will be on all the plans and actions
undertaken during the mentioned period, from the Serbian as well
as from the Croatian side, to show when they were coordinated and
when they emerged independently of each other, when and why they
were in opposition, and what their real objectives were. As the
national liberation plans and actions of the Serbs and Croats as
regards the Krajina are infrequently dealt with in existing
literature and very seldom in conjunction, we believe that our
approach will permit this problem to be more fully understood.
