While music played an important role in the Serbian medieval state
(from the twelfth to the fifteenth century), official music died out
during the period of Turkish enslavement. The Serbs in Vojvodina
(within the borders of the Habsburg empire) once again became involved
in European musical trends in the eighteenth century, but they did not
forget their traditional roots.
