Serbia holds polls: Democrats first, Radicals second

BELGRADE -- The Electoral Commission, RIK, announced its figures based on 99.58 pct of counted votes from the Sunday parliamentary ballot. According to this, the coalition led by the Democrats (DS) won 38.44 percent of the ballots, 102 seats in the new parliament, followed by the Serb Radical Party (SRS), which garnered 29.36 percent of the votes cast, or 78 seats.
Socialist party with its 20 seats - who is dubbed "kingmaker of Serbia" - will cast a deciding vote in forming a government. Two opposed blocs (Democrats and Radicals) need SPS support in order to have the necessary 126 seats for the majority in the parliament. Negotiations between the parties are under way and everything is still up in the air.
