AID TO VICTIMS OF THE GREEK EARTHQUAKE
|
Septemeber 21, 1999
In a ceremony at the Greek Embassy, Washington DC, on September 21, 1999,
Predrag Pajic and Marijana Kolak, President and Vice-President of the
Serbian Unity Congress DC Chapter, presented a check for $5,000 in aid
of the victims of the Greek earthquake to Ambassador Alexis Christopoulos.
Accepting the check Ambassador Christopoulos said that he valued it both
as a practical gift and as a "symbol of the spiritual unity of the Greek
and Serbian people." Although their governments might differ, the two
peoples "always have and always will help each other." "At root we are
one people." Ambassador Christopoulos recalled with affection his own
years in the Greek Embassy in Belgrade (1981-87) and said that one undying
memory was when, on departure, he was the guest of honor at a parade in
Kragujevac commemorating the solidarity of Greece and Serbia in World
War I.
